Reading and phonics will always be the foundation of education. The ability to read is an essential skill that everyone should possess. Writing begins at birth and those who do not have parents who foster a love of reading will be left behind. In the digital age, it makes sense that there are several interactive reading websites. In this article, we review five interactive reading pages that are engaging for students. Every place offers scary resources for teachers and parents.

ICTgames is a phonic entertainment site that explores the process of reading through the use of games. This page is directed to PK-2. ICTgames has about 35 games covering various literacy topics. Topics included in these games are abc order, letter sounds, letter matching, cvc, sound blends, word construction, spelling, sentence writing and a few others. Games are centered around dinosaurs, planes, dragons, rockets, and other age-appropriate subjects designed to engage students. ICTgames also has a math game component that is extremely useful.
PBS Kids is a great site designed to promote phonics and reading in an interactive way. PBS Kids contains all the educational programs that PBS television offers to children. Each program has different types of games and activities engaged to help children learn certain skills. Children’s PBS games and activities include many different alphabet learning tools that address all aspects of learning the alphabetic principle such as alphabetical order, letter names and sounds; the initial, middle, and final voices in question, and the sound mixture. PBS Kids has a reading, spelling and thinking component. Kids can have stories read to them by looking at their favorite characters and seeing the words at the bottom of the screen. Kids can learn how to write words with lots of games and songs specifically for spelling purposes. PBS Kids has a printable section where kids can learn through coloring and following directions. PBS Kids also addresses math, science and other subjects. Children get the unique opportunity to interact with characters from their favorite programs in a fun learning environment. ReadWriteThink is a scary interactive phonics and reading page for K-12. This site is supported by the International Reading Association and NCTE. ReadWriteThink has resources for classes, professional development, and for parents to use at home. ReadWriteThink offers 59 different student interactions that go to all grades. Each interactive provides a suggested guide for the class. These interactions cover a variety of topics including alphabetical principles, poetry, writing tools, reading comprehension, character, plot, book cover, story summaries, graphic, thinking, elaboration, organization, summary, and more. Softschools is a terrific place to help Pre-K High School students develop a strong sense of reading. The site has specific class files that you can click to customize your learning outcome. Softschools has quizzes, games, worksheets and flashcards designed to highlight specific topics within phonics and language arts. Some of these topics include grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, lowercase / uppercase, abc order, start / middle / end sounds, checked words, digraphs, diphthongs, synonyms / antonyms, pronoun / noun, adjective / adverb, rhyming words, syllables, and much more. Worksheets and quizzes can be created automatically or custom made by the teacher. Softschools also has a section test test for grade 3 and above. Softschools is not just a fantastic phonics and web site language. It is also excellent for many other subjects, including math, science, social studies , Spanish, handwriting and more. More “
Starfall is an excellent free phonics interactive website that is suitable for PreK-2 grades. Starfall has various components for kids to explore the reading process. There is a component of the alphabet where each letter is broken down into its own little book. The book goes over the sounds of the letter, the words that begin with that letter, how to sign each letter, and the name of each letter. Starfall also has a creativity section. Kids can build and decorate things like candles and pumpkins in their creative way by reading a book. Another component of Starfall is reading. There are some interactive stories that help encourage learning to read at 4 graduate levels. Starfall has word building games and also has a math component where kids can learn early math skills from understanding basic numbers to early addition and subtraction. All of these learning components are provided to the public free of charge. There is an additional Starfall that you can purchase for a small fee.
